Road surfacing funding cuts create bleak future for regions

ROAD signs for a reduction in the speed limit to 60 kilometres per hour were placed on the Coleraine hill road heading north towards Harrow a few weeks ago, as the condition of the road continues to deteriorate. Lowan MP, Emma Kealy said the signs were an indication of the reduction in government spending on maintenance and criticised the move, especially given the repairs made to part of the same section of road earlier this year. “We want to make sure we’ve got safe country roads and that when the government puts money in to fix the roads, that it’s done once and it’s done right,” she said. THE alarming state of country roads looks set to continue to decline in condition as the lack of significant budget allocation for their maintenance takes increasing effect.
