SOUTHERN Stay Disability Services will expand its services with a new $1.5 million specialist accommodation facility in central Hamilton, providing housing to four local adults with disabilities.
It is hoped that construction works to transform the vacant block at 13 Scoresby Street will begin in June.
Southern Stay chief executive, Paul Lougheed was on site on Thursday and said the accommodation was much needed and would provide employment opportunities for locals.
“It’s a project that our organisation has decided was needed for Hamilton, there is nothing else like it in Hamilton,” he said.
Southern Stay Disability Services has made the initial investment in the house, which will be supported by specialist disability accommodation payments – residents will receive these from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as time progresses.
“It’s an initial outlay for our organisation but some of that money will come over the next 15-20 years,” Mr Lougheed told The Spectator.
This will be the first specialist disability accommodation home built in Hamilton for several years.
There are currently 23 group homes for people with disabilities, supporting 106 residents in shared supported accommodation in south-west Victoria.
