Scary crash at busy intersection

A 64-year-old male had an untimely medical episode at 2.15pm on Wednesday while driving north along Thompson Street towards Lonsdale Street.

The episode caused his car to mount the footpath at the side of the Commercial Hotel and collide with parking meters and the hotel’s wall.

Hamilton Police leading senior constable, Ben Carroll, said the driver then bounced off the wall, veering left at the roundabout and colliding with a Holden Colorado before crashing to a halt at a light pole.

“The driver and passenger of the Holden Colorado were both uninjured whilst State Emergency Services and ambulance had to be called for the assistance of the 64-year-old male driver of the Toyota wagon,” he said.

“The ambulance then transported him to the Hamilton Base Hospital for treatment and he is currently doing okay.”

Both the ute and the wagon were towed away from the scene in quite the spectacle at one of the busiest roundabouts in town.

Traffic had to be diverted from the intersection for more than an hour after the collision.
