New Collins St function centre gets application nod

SET to become a new function centre for Hamilton is the old St Mary’s ‘Academy’ building with the Southern Grampians Shire Council approving the plans last week, despite 15 objections lodged from 18 residents. The proposed development involves the removal of six mature trees (including one gum tree that has caused footpath damage in the past), minor internal changes to the building, a brick pier front fence and the addition of a new pergola for outdoor dining. There will also be 45 car parking spaces on site, a landscaped layout with formalised garden areas for guests, and a commercial kitchen that will provide on-site and off-site catering. FOLLOWING approval at last week’s Southern Grampians Shire Council (SGSC) meeting, a proposal to convert the former St Mary’s School/Catholic Convent at 11 Collins Street to a function centre will go ahead, albeit with some changes from the original planning application.
